Which valves for your guitar amp?
There are three families: preamp valves (ECC83/12AX7, 12AT7, ECC82/12AU7), which shape the gain and grain; power valves (EL34, EL84, 6L6GC, 6V6, KT88), which deliver volume and dynamics; and rectifier valves (GZ34/5AR4). Remember to replace power valves in matched pairs and to stick to the original type for your amp (Fender, Marshall, Vox, Mesa…).
